  15. Subject: Slow Glass #25 (REPOST)
  16. Status: OR
  17.
  18.
  19. This is a repost.
  20.
  21. Most of the people on the mailing list failed to get the catalogue when
  22. I originally did the distribution because the system here ran out of disk
  23. space. Sendmail failed to inform me of this fact, and I blithely assumed
  24. that silence is golden.
  25.
  26. Because I cannot easily determine who I missed, I am reposting to the
  27. entire mailing list. I apologize if you get two copies...
  28.
  29. Apologies too for those who get the catalogue only a day or two before
  30. deadline. Ring your orders in to Justin; he won't even mind you calling
  31. late (anytime before 11 or 12pm) just this once.
  32.
  33.                     Michael
  34.
  35. *****************************************************************************
  36.
  37. Here is the Slow Glass catalogue #25.
  38.
  39. Remember to let me know if you don't want this posted to you any
  40. more (excepting those of you who requested the catalogue once only).
  41. Feel free to forward/hardcopy this document to any interested party.
  42. Catalogue back issues are available on request; however, it is usually
  43. easier and more effective simply to ring Justin and discuss the
  44. availability of unlisted titles.
  45.
  46. Don't send your order to me.
  47. Send it to Justin Ackroyd at Slow Glass Books.
  48.
  49. Disclaimer: I have no connection with Slow Glass Books apart from
  50. being an extremely satisfied customer. My comments in no way
  51. reflect the views or policies of Slow Glass (and vice-versa).
  52.
  53.
  54. This month's wretched random roundabout ramblings...
  55. ----------------------------------------------------
  56.
  57. [
  58.   These are just my own thoughts as I flip through the catalogue.
  59.   Pay attention at your own risk!
  60. ]
  61.
  62. Firstly, an apology. You probably noticed that catalogue #24 never
  63. dropped timely into your mailbox. You are not alone.
  64.
  65. In fact, it wasn't emailed out due to one disaster after another
  66. (the worst being that my modem got broke). I sincerely regret any
  67. incovenience or assorted anxieties this may have caused you.
  68.
  69. There. I've grovelled enough. If anyone mentions the matter again I'll
  70. kick their teeth in. If you want a back issue, let me know. You can
  71. also ask Justin to snail mail you hardcopy.
  72.
  73. *******************************************************************
  74.
  75. Gordon Dickson's _The Dragon and the George_ is a tightly written
  76. and amusing piece of light fantasy. A classic. So let me reccommend
  77. it to you before pointing out that a sequel is being published.
  78. Dickson has a habit of being extremely patchy; for instance, his
  79. materpiece _Soldier, Ask Not_ is so unlike the disasterous
  80. _The Earth Lords_ that the mind refuses to contemplate them both
  81. under the same pen. So it goes. _The Dragon Knight_ is probably
  82. good, and it could be worth the punt if you have some spare cash.
  83.
  84. I dislike "shared world" anthologies. These can come about in three
  85. ways. Traditionally, an author writes a number of popular stories
  86. and novels around the same mileau. Later on, the name of the successful
  87. series and the fame of the author is used to sell the works of others.
  88. The _Man Kzin Wars_ books spring to mind as a perfect example. Even
  89. though some of the authors have proven themselves talented time and again,
  90. their efforts seem constrained and stilted when they conform to another's
  91. framework. Saberhagen's _Berserker_ universe is another case in point.
  92. Some authors managed to break or avoid the chains of conformity, but
  93. only at the price of not really fitting in to the worlds they
  94. storied of.
  95.
  96. Even worse are the second sort of shared world. The one where only an
  97. author's name is used, as a clear marketing ploy.
  98. _Philip Jose Farmer's The Dungeon_ is a prime offender. This series had
  99. basically no redeeming features. It was confused, and suffered a lack
  100. of direction and constancy of characterisation that convinced me I was
  101. wasting time and money. Another of this ilk is _Roger Zelazny's Alien
  102. Speedway_. This was actually based on a short story for background,
  103. but source material was so scarce that this is clearly just a money
  104. making exercise.
  105.
  106. The final means of sharing a universe has had mixed success. This is the
  107. collaborative effort by a number of author's to create and evolve a
  108. background. Ellison's _Meadea_ was a noble effort, _Wild Cards_
  109. actually works and _Thieve's World_ is an abomination.  Don't go
  110. near anything with a title like _XXX in Hell_ (perhaps it should
  111. read _Authors in Hell_).
  112.
  113. Overall, these beasties seldom work. Where is all this rhetoric to lead?
  114. _Foundations Friends_ is an anthology, shared world no less (if you don't
  115. know which world, give up SF now; go and read sci fi). The author list
  116. is impressive and Martin Greenberg is an experienced and talented editor.
  117. A good editor is no small thing; I suspect that George Martin's editorship
  118. of early _Wild Cards_ was a substantial factor in their success. I'd give
  119. _Foundation's Friends_ a go.
  120.
  121. Justin has listed some more Farfhd and Grey Mouser reprints. These
  122. _Swords..._ novels by Leiber are simply a wonderful read. Catch up
  123. on them if you have been unfortunate up till now.
  124.
  125. OH MY GOD! W.T. Quick hasn't given up writing yet. I liked what this guy
  126. did in his first couple of novels, for the ideas if not the execution or
  127. originality of vision. But after that he became an expert generator of
  128. dross. You have now been offically warned against _Singularities_.
  129.
  130. _Coinspinner's Story_ (Lost Swords #5) has made it to paperback. This
  131. outing by Saberhagen is not as good as _Farslayer's Story_ (#4), but
  132. competant fantasy nonetheless. A good light read, and anyway if you have
  133. the others you just have to get the next one, ne-c'est pas? Rumour has
  134. it that book 6 will be around as a hardcover by the end of the year.
  135.
  136. I have nothing to say about the Star Trek publications listed in the
  137. catalogue. I would like to embaress Justin is passing, however, by
  138. recounting how I found a Star Trek comic round at his place just the
  139. other day. High literature.
  140.
  141. Christopher Stasheff's _Warlock_ books are good and bad. The first three
  142. or four fall into the category of "nothing special, read it on the train".
  143. The others have their use, no doubt, but reading does not make the list.
  144.
  145. _Knight of Shadows_ is another exciting installment in the Amber series
  146. with yet another cliff hanger ending and more questions than answers
  147. overall. The mind boggles at how Zelazny will tie up all the lose ends.
  148. I reccommend this tome, but careful! Amber is addictive.
  149.
  150. Zelazny and Saberhagen have a new collaboration _The Black Throne_.
  151. Their last effort together was _Coils_, published many years ago and
  152. suprisingly good.  Zelazny seems to be able to work with other authors
  153. very effectively; _Deus Irae_ (with P.K. Dick [is dead alas!])
  154. supports this thesis.
  155.
  156. Well I have run out of time if I want to mail out this month.
  157. Just one last tidbit of news; a new Discworld novel _Eric_ is
  158. due in a couple of months. This time we hear about the Discworld's
  159. first magic hacker...
