Subject: Slow Glass #25 (REPOST)
Status: OR
This is a repost.
Most of the people on the mailing list failed to get the catalogue when
I originally did the distribution because the system here ran out of disk
space. Sendmail failed to inform me of this fact, and I blithely assumed
that silence is golden.
Because I cannot easily determine who I missed, I am reposting to the
entire mailing list. I apologize if you get two copies...
Apologies too for those who get the catalogue only a day or two before
deadline. Ring your orders in to Justin; he won't even mind you calling
late (anytime before 11 or 12pm) just this once.
Michael
*****************************************************************************
Here is the Slow Glass catalogue #25.
Remember to let me know if you don't want this posted to you any
more (excepting those of you who requested the catalogue once only).
Feel free to forward/hardcopy this document to any interested party.
Catalogue back issues are available on request; however, it is usually
easier and more effective simply to ring Justin and discuss the
availability of unlisted titles.
Don't send your order to me.
Send it to Justin Ackroyd at Slow Glass Books.
Disclaimer: I have no connection with Slow Glass Books apart from
being an extremely satisfied customer. My comments in no way
reflect the views or policies of Slow Glass (and vice-versa).
This month's wretched random roundabout ramblings...

These are just my own thoughts as I flip through the catalogue.
Pay attention at your own risk!

Firstly, an apology. You probably noticed that catalogue #24 never
dropped timely into your mailbox. You are not alone.
In fact, it wasn't emailed out due to one disaster after another
(the worst being that my modem got broke). I sincerely regret any
incovenience or assorted anxieties this may have caused you.
There. I've grovelled enough. If anyone mentions the matter again I'll
kick their teeth in. If you want a back issue, let me know. You can
also ask Justin to snail mail you hardcopy.

Gordon Dickson's _The Dragon and the George_ is a tightly written
and amusing piece of light fantasy. A classic. So let me reccommend
it to you before pointing out that a sequel is being published.
Dickson has a habit of being extremely patchy; for instance, his
materpiece _Soldier, Ask Not_ is so unlike the disasterous
_The Earth Lords_ that the mind refuses to contemplate them both
under the same pen. So it goes. _The Dragon Knight_ is probably
good, and it could be worth the punt if you have some spare cash.
I dislike "shared world" anthologies. These can come about in three
ways. Traditionally, an author writes a number of popular stories
and novels around the same mileau. Later on, the name of the successful
series and the fame of the author is used to sell the works of others.
The _Man Kzin Wars_ books spring to mind as a perfect example. Even
though some of the authors have proven themselves talented time and again,
their efforts seem constrained and stilted when they conform to another's
framework. Saberhagen's _Berserker_ universe is another case in point.
Some authors managed to break or avoid the chains of conformity, but
only at the price of not really fitting in to the worlds they
storied of.
Even worse are the second sort of shared world. The one where only an
author's name is used, as a clear marketing ploy.
_Philip Jose Farmer's The Dungeon_ is a prime offender. This series had
basically no redeeming features. It was confused, and suffered a lack
of direction and constancy of characterisation that convinced me I was
wasting time and money. Another of this ilk is _Roger Zelazny's Alien
Speedway_. This was actually based on a short story for background,
but source material was so scarce that this is clearly just a money
making exercise.
The final means of sharing a universe has had mixed success. This is the
collaborative effort by a number of author's to create and evolve a
background. Ellison's _Meadea_ was a noble effort, _Wild Cards_
actually works and _Thieve's World_ is an abomination. Don't go
near anything with a title like _XXX in Hell_ (perhaps it should
read _Authors in Hell_).
Overall, these beasties seldom work. Where is all this rhetoric to lead?
_Foundations Friends_ is an anthology, shared world no less (if you don't
know which world, give up SF now; go and read sci fi). The author list
is impressive and Martin Greenberg is an experienced and talented editor.
A good editor is no small thing; I suspect that George Martin's editorship
of early _Wild Cards_ was a substantial factor in their success. I'd give
_Foundation's Friends_ a go.
Justin has listed some more Farfhd and Grey Mouser reprints. These
_Swords..._ novels by Leiber are simply a wonderful read. Catch up
on them if you have been unfortunate up till now.
OH MY GOD! W.T. Quick hasn't given up writing yet. I liked what this guy
did in his first couple of novels, for the ideas if not the execution or
originality of vision. But after that he became an expert generator of
dross. You have now been offically warned against _Singularities_.
_Coinspinner's Story_ (Lost Swords #5) has made it to paperback. This
outing by Saberhagen is not as good as _Farslayer's Story_ (#4), but
competant fantasy nonetheless. A good light read, and anyway if you have
the others you just have to get the next one, ne-c'est pas? Rumour has
it that book 6 will be around as a hardcover by the end of the year.
I have nothing to say about the Star Trek publications listed in the
catalogue. I would like to embaress Justin is passing, however, by
recounting how I found a Star Trek comic round at his place just the
other day. High literature.
Christopher Stasheff's _Warlock_ books are good and bad. The first three
or four fall into the category of "nothing special, read it on the train".
The others have their use, no doubt, but reading does not make the list.
_Knight of Shadows_ is another exciting installment in the Amber series
with yet another cliff hanger ending and more questions than answers
overall. The mind boggles at how Zelazny will tie up all the lose ends.
I reccommend this tome, but careful! Amber is addictive.
Zelazny and Saberhagen have a new collaboration _The Black Throne_.
Their last effort together was _Coils_, published many years ago and
suprisingly good. Zelazny seems to be able to work with other authors
very effectively; _Deus Irae_ (with P.K. Dick [is dead alas!])
supports this thesis.
Well I have run out of time if I want to mail out this month.
Just one last tidbit of news; a new Discworld novel _Eric_ is
due in a couple of months. This time we hear about the Discworld's
first magic hacker...

CATALOGUE 25
FORTRESS - GABRIELLE LORD
Sando and Hedda are running for their lives. They
break out of Sydney, the walled city of 2075, into
an Australian decimated by civil strife, rising
salt levels, a ravaged ozone layer, and daily
temperatures of fifty-seven degrees. Their flight
to this salt-encrusted otherworld forces them to
face its unimaginable inhabitants, bred in a
secret weapons laboratory, while they themselves
struggle to hold onto their love for each other
and for the truth, in a gripping battle against
human evil with a terrifying future face.
Gabrielle Lord was born in Sydney in 1946. After
studying at Sydney and Armidale universities she
worked variously as a saleswoman, teacher,
fruitpicker and spent nine years with the CES as
an employment officer. SALT is her fourth novel.

home planet of Barrayar that they
place him under house arrest. When
that doesn't work he is sent to the
other side of the galaxy - where who
should he run into but his old pals,
the Free Dendarii Mercenaries. A
good thing it is, too, because it turns
out that Miles' childhood chum,
Emperor Gregor, has been a victim of
foul play, and only Miles - with a
little Dendarii muscle - can save him.
This is very important to Miles;
because if Gregor dies, the only
person who could become Emperor is
Miles himself - and that he regards
as a fate worse than death. The

tion of his drawings once again
invades his life, and the fiends from
hell stir restlessly in their slumber.
By the light of thousands of giant
lunar moths, they are hurled into a
horrifying crisis that will change
their lives forever.

TIGANA
___ NAL F-O-N HC $26.95
After years of rivalry, the petty
princedoms of the three-fingered
peninsula known as the Palm are
being swallowed up in a long war
between two sorceror/warlords from
overseas. Hardest hit is the province
known as Tigana. When King Brandin
of Ygrath lost his only son in the
battle for Tigana, he took a terrible
vengeance - not only destroying a
vibrant culture, but removing the
place from memory, so that even its
remaining inhabitants live like exiles,
their homeland gone. Brandin's
nemesis is Alberico, the sorcerous
Tyrant of the Eastern Palm, a
cautious politician not so very
different from the former rulers of
the land, but more brutal. A motley
band of rebels opposes this dual
tyranny, with a landless prince at its
head; along with Devin, a young
singer with the gift of quiet intelli-
gence, a beautiful thornbush of a
woman, a troubled master of disguise,
and two aristocrats of very different
stripes. Recommended.

A review by Cath Ortlieb. Piemur,
Master Robinton, Lessa F'lar, Jaxom,
Toric and others are back along with
new characters Jayge, Aramina and
Lady Thella. Some of the incidents in
Anne McCafffrey's latest novel, The

from The White Dragon. Piemur
further explores the Southern
Continent and Pern learns more about
its early history. The lives of people
outside the Holds are explored.
Jayge's family chose to be wandering
traders but the fall of Thread
changed their lives. Lady Thella, not
content with living in her brother's
Hold, uses her knowledge and cunning
to attract a band of renegades to
raid others. Her obsession with
capturing Aramina, who can hear
dragons, threatens the lives of many
and incurs the enmity of Jayge. Their
lives become intertwined and e-
verything comes to a head on the
Southern Continent. Recommended for

The following titles are due for release
mainly in September, October and November,

butors, some could appear earlier, some later,
and, maybe, some not at all. As usual I am
taking an educated guess at the prices for the
local releases - especially the limited editions.

Two hundred years in the future,
the Moon is emerging from an age
of innocence. Once pioneers, the
easiest motto for these Lunar
families is "Cut the politics". They
think they are safe from the
sophistication and corruption of
political intrigue. William Pearce is
searching for absolute zero. No
scientist has yet succeeded, and
William is almost there. His wife has
bought 410 heads, cryogenically
frozen centuries before in the hope
of resurrection. She thinks she can
read them for information. There are
dangers. William doesn't quite
understand that his experiments
could distort space and time. Rho
doesn't realise that her heads will
bring interference from a new and
deadly faction, the totally devoted
Logologists.

acclaimed director of his generation.
Phil is unrecognised for years, and
then makes a series of notorious
horror films. He has everything; love
fame, money. Then he takes a gun

hopes the answer is on the video
tapes that Phil has left him - but
when he plays them, he finds
messages from beyond the grave. Step
by step, Weber learns that the evil
Phil portrayed in his last film is not
just slasher gore. He has created
something which threatens his
friends' lives - and if Weber doesn't
put it right, and fast, that evil will
extend far beyond a handful of
people in Hollywood. Recommended.

the people photosynthesise. the
Consensus, a vast DNA unit, controls

SECRET STRANGERS
___ FUT H-O-N HC $32.95
The first incident is a suicide: a
young wife who cannot have
children. The second is more bizarre
- a God-fearing father butchers his
family before turning a gun on
himself. The a well-respected
accountant simply disappears. But
dark secrets abound in the pros-
perous town of Clearville, for behind
the shuttered windows of the
middle-class homes lies a network of
depravity and vice. Thomas Tessier
would have to be one of the most
underrated horror writers around.

CHUNG KUO: THE MIDDLE KINGDOM
___ HS SF-R1-N $10.95
Chung Kuo, for three thousand
years, as the Great Wheel turned
and a dozen dynasties rose and fell,
this was the name the Han - the
Chinese - gave their land. Chung
Kuo: the Middle Kingdom. Now at
the turn of the 22nd century, it has
come to mean much more. For more
than a hundred years the Empire of
the Han has encompassed the world,
the Earth's bloated population of 36
billion contained in its vast, hive-like
cities. War, famine and political
instability, are things of the past.
The Council of Seven rule Chung Kuo
with an absolute authority, their
boast that they have ended the
Change and stopped the Great Wheel
turning. Yet at the moment of its
greatest strength and confidence,
Chung Kuo is suddenly vulnerable. A
new generation of powerful young
merchants begin to challenge the
authority of the Seven, demanding
Change. But Change means war and a
return to the savageries of the past.
